Intelligent Downloading
Intelligent Downloading is a common form of streaming that is similar to Web Serving in that image data are downloaded from a server to a client for local processing. The client application can be browser-based or can be a stand-alone program.
Intelligent Downloading uses specialized rules and methods for the transfer of data to support good user interaction speeds (for example, by downloading thumbnails first, or by downloading lossy images first, followed by downloading of full-fidelity data). Intelligent downloading also employs advanced compression methods such as Wavelets.
Although more efficient than Web Serving at transferring data from servers to clients, Intelligent Downloading still relies on the power and capabilities of the client device to perform local processing of the image data.
